“Payment declined by bank”
Last verified 2026-10
Why this happens
Your issuing bank blocked the cross-border transaction, not Alipay or WeChat. Banks routinely decline the first foreign-card transaction on Alipay/WeChat as a fraud safeguard — especially the first one from a new country.
How to fix it
- 1
Call your bank's fraud line (number is on the back of your card). Say: 'I'm traveling in China, please approve the Alipay/WeChat transaction.'
- 2
Most banks lift the block instantly once you confirm it's you. Try the payment again right after.
- 3
If the bank confirms they didn't block it, check whether your card has 3D Secure enabled — a failed 3DS check shows the same 'declined' message.
- 4
Link a different Visa or Mastercard and retry. Acceptance is often card-specific, not account-specific.
