“Insufficient funds / cash advance declined”
Last verified 2026-10
Why this happens
Your bank classified the Alipay/WeChat transaction as a cash advance (not a purchase). Cash advances trigger immediate fees, a separate lower limit, and often a hard decline if cash-advance is disabled on your card.
How to fix it
- 1
Call your bank and ask how they code Alipay/WeChat foreign-card transactions. If they treat it as cash advance, ask them to reclassify or enable cash advance.
- 2
Cards that commonly miscode: some Capital One, Discover, and certain US credit-union cards. Debit cards and Chase/Amex-Visa usually code correctly as purchase.
- 3
For amounts over ¥200, the 3% service fee is added — some banks decline the combined amount against a purchase limit. Confirm your card's foreign-spend limit with the bank.
- 4
Use a debit card or a different credit card if your bank won't reclassify.
