Scan works but payment gets declined

Last updated: October 2026

What's happening

This usually points to the linked card, not the app. Common causes: 3D Secure not enabled, the issuing bank blocked the cross-border transaction, the card hit a foreign-spend limit, or the merchant's code triggered a higher-fee tier your card rejected.

Steps to fix it

  1. 1Check the error message — 'payment declined by bank' means your bank rejected it (call them or check the app); 'insufficient funds' is self-explanatory; 'verification needed' means re-link the card.
  2. 2Call your bank's fraud line if you're traveling — many decline first foreign transactions as a fraud safeguard and lift it immediately on request.
  3. 3Try a different linked card if you have one, or link a backup card now.
  4. 4For amounts over ¥200, a 3% fee applies — your bank may decline if it treats this as a cash advance. Confirm the transaction type with your bank.
  5. 5Retry with the VPN fully off — bank anti-fraud systems sometimes flag VPN-assisted transactions.
  6. 6If it still fails, unlink and re-link the card, making sure 3D Secure is enabled.

Backup options

  • •Pay cash for this transaction and sort out the card issue later.
  • •Ask a companion with a working setup to pay, and reimburse them.
