Card name and passport name must match exactly

Last updated: October 2026

What's happening

Alipay and WeChat compare the name on your card against the name on the passport you uploaded for verification. Even small differences — a missing middle name, a different spelling, or different spacing — cause the card binding to fail.

Steps to fix it

  1. 1Look at your passport: note the full name exactly as printed (including middle names, order, and spacing).
  2. 2Look at your card: check if the name matches exactly — some cards print only initials for middle names.
  3. 3In the app, enter the card details with the name exactly as printed on the card — not your full passport name.
  4. 4If the card uses a different format (e.g. 'J SMITH' but passport says 'JOHN ALAN SMITH'), use a different card whose name matches your passport fully.
  5. 5Try a card that prints your full name as it appears in your passport — travel credit cards often do this.

Backup options

  • •Wise and Revolut cards print your name as you register (which you control) — sign up using exactly the name on your passport.
