Can't link your foreign bank card
Last updated: October 2026
What's happening
Alipay and WeChat Pay support Visa and Mastercard for tourists, but card acceptance depends on your issuing bank's country and whether 3D Secure (Verified by Visa / Mastercard ID Check) is enabled. The official visitor guide also lists JCB, Diners Club, and Discover; American Express is not on that list. Prepaid and travel cards may be rejected.
Steps to fix it
- 1Confirm your card is Visa or Mastercard (most widely supported). American Express is not on the official supported card list; prepaid travel cards may be rejected.
- 2Enable 3D Secure on your card through your bank's app or website before retrying — this is a common hidden cause of rejection.
- 3Make sure international/online transactions are allowed on the card. Some banks block them by default.
- 4Enter your card details exactly as printed, including the middle name if it's on the card.
- 5Use a card from a major bank (Chase, HSBC, Barclays, etc.) if you have one — smaller credit unions and online-only banks have higher failure rates.
- 6Try a different Visa/Mastercard if the first one is rejected — the issue is often card-specific, not account-specific.
Backup options
- •If your card is rejected, try a different Visa or Mastercard if you have one.
- •If all cards fail, switch to cash for now and try linking again over Wi-Fi later.
