Enable 3D Secure on your card first
Last updated: October 2026
What's happening
3D Secure (branded as Verified by Visa or Mastercard ID Check) is a card security feature that Alipay and WeChat require before they'll accept your card. If it's not enabled, the card binding step silently fails or gives a generic error.
Steps to fix it
- 1Open your bank's mobile app or website.
- 2Find the security settings for your card — look for 'Verified by Visa', 'Mastercard ID Check', '3D Secure', or 'Online payment security'.
- 3Toggle it on. Some banks enable it instantly; others send a text to confirm.
- 4Return to Alipay/WeChat and retry adding the card — you'll now see a 3D Secure verification prompt (OTP by SMS or in-app approval) during card binding.
- 5Complete that prompt promptly when it appears.
- 6If you can't find the 3D Secure setting, call your bank and ask them to enable it.
Backup options
- •If your bank makes enabling 3D Secure difficult, try a different Visa or Mastercard.
