Bank is treating this as a cash advance
Last updated: October 2026
What's happening
Your bank classified the Alipay/WeChat payment as a cash advance instead of a regular purchase. Cash advances have separate lower limits, instant fees, and are often declined by default.
Steps to fix it
- 1Call your bank and ask: 'How are you coding Alipay/WeChat Pay transactions — as purchases or cash advances?'
- 2Ask them to reclassify these as regular purchase transactions, or enable cash advance if that's how they code it.
- 3For amounts over ¥200, a 3% service fee is added by Alipay/WeChat. Your bank sees a slightly higher amount — confirm your purchase limit covers it.
- 4US credit unions and some Discover cards have been reported to miscode. Debit cards and major-bank cards tend to code correctly.
Backup options
- •Use a debit card instead — debit transactions are almost never classified as cash advances.
- •A debit card from another major bank may code differently — try one if you have it.
