Your bank declined the transaction
Last updated: October 2026
What's happening
The transaction was declined by your issuing bank, not by Alipay or WeChat. Banks routinely block the first foreign-card transaction on Chinese payment apps as a fraud safeguard — one phone call usually fixes this immediately.
Steps to fix it
- 1Call your bank's international fraud line right now. The number is on the back of your card.
- 2Say: 'I'm in China and trying to use my card on Alipay/WeChat Pay. Please approve these transactions.'
- 3Most banks lift the block within minutes of confirming it's you.
- 4Also ask them to: enable cross-border transactions, enable online transactions, and confirm 3D Secure is active.
- 5Retry the payment after hanging up. If it still declines, try linking a second card — acceptance is often card-specific.
Backup options
- •If your main bank keeps blocking, try a different Visa or Mastercard if you have one.
- •Cash for this transaction while you sort out the card.
