American Express may not be supported

Last updated: October 2026

What's happening

American Express is not listed in the official visitor guide for Alipay or WeChat Pay tourist mode. Visa and Mastercard are the most widely supported options.

Steps to fix it

  1. 1Get a Visa or Mastercard — most major banks issue both.
  2. 2If you need an additional card, options like Wise (Mastercard debit) or Revolut (Visa/Mastercard debit) can be applied for before your trip.
  3. 3If you have a bank that issues Visa/Mastercard in addition to Amex, use that card instead.

Backup options

  • •Cash for now. Get a Visa or Mastercard before your next trip.
  • •If you decide to get a Wise or Revolut card, apply before your trip to allow time for delivery.
