“Payment fails only when VPN is on”
Last verified 2026-10
Why this happens
Alipay and WeChat route through Chinese servers. A VPN adds a foreign hop that trips risk control, fails location checks, and makes banks flag the transaction as fraud. This is one of the single most common avoidable payment failures.
How to fix it
- 1
Turn the VPN completely off before opening Alipay or WeChat Pay.
- 2
Make the payment with the VPN off. The apps work fine on Chinese networks without a VPN — the Great Firewall does not block payment apps.
- 3
Turn the VPN back on afterward if you need it for other apps.
- 4
If you have an always-on corporate VPN, ask IT to whitelist alipay.com / weixin.qq.com, or disconnect during payments.
- 5
If the app crashes on open, VPN is the first thing to check.
