What are the fees and limits for foreign cards?
Transactions under ¥200 are free. Over ¥200, a ~3% fee applies to the entire transaction amount (not just the excess). Alipay single-transaction limit is ~¥3,000; WeChat Pay is ~¥6,500. You cannot transfer money to individuals or send red packets with a foreign card.
Step by step
- 1For small purchases (food, transport, small shops): no fee if the transaction is under ¥200.
- 2For larger purchases: 3% is charged on the full amount, not just the part over ¥200. Example: ¥250 payment → ¥7.50 fee. ¥400 payment → ¥12 fee.
- 3Alipay single-transaction limit: ~¥3,000. WeChat Pay: ~¥6,500. Both have ~¥50,000 annual top-up limits.
- 4Tip: splitting a large bill into multiple payments under ¥200 can avoid the fee — ask the merchant if they allow it.
- 5Cannot do with foreign cards: P2P transfers to individuals, red packets (hongbao), in-app balance top-up.
Common mistakes
- !Fees are charged by Alipay/WeChat, not your bank. Your bank may also add their own foreign transaction fee.
- !The free-under-¥200 policy has been in effect since late 2023 and may change — check the app for current terms.
