Alipay/WeChat suddenly says my account is restricted — what do I do?
Stop retrying payments immediately. Look for an in-app verification prompt, complete it if present. If told to wait, wait the full period without attempting any payment.
Step by step
- 1Stop all payment attempts right now — more failures extend the restriction period.
- 2Open the app and look for a banner or notification. It will usually say either 'verify identity' or 'wait X hours'.
- 3If verification is required: re-upload your passport photo (follow the clean-photo technique — flat surface, no glare).
- 4If a wait is required: wait the full stated period. Do not try to make payments, do not unlink and relink cards.
- 5After the restriction lifts, make one small test payment before relying on it.
- 6If the restriction doesn't lift after 48 hours, contact support via in-app help or via Twitter/X (@AlipayGlobal or @WeChatPay_EN).
Common mistakes
- !Repeatedly attempting restricted payments is the #1 way to turn a 24-hour restriction into a 7-day restriction.
- !Don't unlink and relink your card during a restriction — it looks like fraud.
