Should I use Alipay or WeChat Pay?
Start with Alipay. It has a dedicated tourist mode designed for foreigners with foreign cards, and the setup process is more straightforward. Set up WeChat Pay as a backup once Alipay works.
Step by step
- 1Download Alipay (blue icon) from the App Store or Google Play. Make sure it's the mainland China version, not AlipayHK.
- 2Register with your foreign phone number and complete passport verification.
- 3Link your Visa or Mastercard — make sure 3D Secure is enabled on the card first.
- 4Test with a small purchase. Once working, optionally set up WeChat Pay as a secondary option.
Common mistakes
- !Don't use AlipayHK — it's for Hong Kong only and doesn't work with mainland merchants.
- !WeChat Pay requires a friend to 'verify' your new account in some regions, which can be a blocker before you arrive.
