WeChat registration / requires a Chinese contact
What's happening
WeChat increasingly requires an existing WeChat user to 'verify' or 'sponsor' a new account registration, especially for non-Chinese numbers. This is a friction point many foreigners hit.
Steps to fix it
- 1If WeChat asks you to invite a friend to verify, ask any WeChat user (a Chinese friend, hotel staff, or someone in a travel group) to scan your verification QR code within 1 hour.
- 2The helper must have WeChat Pay enabled and an account older than 6 months.
- 3If you have no contact in China, register with your home number first — sometimes verification is skipped, sometimes it's mandatory. It varies.
- 4Once registered, set up WeChat Pay separately: Me → Services → Wallet → add a bank card.
- 5Don't repeat failed registration attempts more than 3-4 times — WeChat may temporarily block the number for 24 hours.
Backup options
- •Alipay is generally easier for foreigners to register without a sponsor — start there instead.
- •If you're already in China and stuck, your hotel front desk can usually act as your verification contact.
