Can't download the app

What's happening

Both Alipay and WeChat are available worldwide, but the Chinese mainland versions (needed for local merchant payments) sometimes don't show up on foreign app stores, or the international version lacks mainland payment features.

Steps to fix it

  1. 1On iOS: change your App Store region to Mainland China temporarily, or search 'Alipay' / 'WeChat' directly — the mainland versions usually appear.
  2. 2On Android: download the APK directly from Alipay (alipay.com) or WeChat (weixin.qq.com) official sites instead of Google Play.
  3. 3Make sure you get the mainland version, not 'AlipayHK' or 'WeChat OUT' — those don't work with most Chinese merchants.
  4. 4Reopen the app after install. If it prompts for region, select Mainland China.

Backup options

  • •If you can't download at all, bring enough cash (RMB) for your first 2-3 days and set up once a local helps you.
  • •Ask your hotel front desk — many will help you download and set up on arrival.
